Will Washington drivers soon have another license plate option?

Senate Bill 6032, which would create a special blue plate featuring the Washington Apple logo continues to march through the House in Olympia.  Senator Brad Hawkins authored the legislation.  He said when the Washington Apple Commission approached him about the specialty plate idea, it was really was a no-brainer.

“There’s not a lot of upfront cost to the state, and then in the process of purchasing these license plates which are totally voluntary by our tree fruit supporters, the state will recoup its funding and then the additional revenues will flow to the Apple Education Foundation, and like you said, it helps set up opportunities for multiple generations.”

Hawkins added legislation like this not only celebrates the state’s Ag industry, but also helps to raise awareness.

“When I have these conversations with my colleagues for example about the Cosmic Crisp, some of them don’t realize that our Washington apples are only harvested once a year.  And so a bill like this, you’d be surprised.  It does build up some good will, and then presents an opportunity to build relationships and have communication.”
