Idaho Reports A Good Wheat Crop
Despite struggles with dry soils and poorly timed rains, the 2025 Idaho wheat crop was a good one. Britney Hurst Marchant, Executive Director of the Idaho Wheat Commission noted winter wheat growers enjoyed very good soil moisture numbers in late 2024 when the crop was planted. And then the weather warmed up and dried out starting in May.
“There were some concerns that maybe protein would be high in the wheat, yields would be down, quality would suffer, but it really didn't," Hurst Marchant said. "We had average or above average yields in winter wheat. The protein and test weight were exactly where we like to see them for each of the classes.”
When it comes to spring wheat, Hurst Marchant said yields were off, thanks primarily to the crop being planted quite a bit later.
"But no concerns with quality. And again, that goes back to those investments that we have made on behalf of Idaho farmers to develop varieties of wheat that can easily adapt to unforeseen weather events," she said. "And also farmers, they adapt to weather changes and adapt to challenges very well to produce quality wheat.”
