According to the USDA's latest look at household food security.

 

"11.8% of US households were food insecure, households that had difficulty putting enough food on the table for all their members at some time during the year. This is primarily due to a lack of economic resources for food,” said USDA Economist Alicia Coleman-Jensen.

 

He added that comparing 2017 with the prior year in terms of food insecurity nationwide.

 

"Food insecurity in 2017 was down from 2016. In 2016, 12.3% of US households were food insecure and that's a statistically significant decline to 11.8% in 2017."

 

 

Other findings within the newest version of this annual report include, "In 2017, 4.5% of US households experienced very low food security, that was down significantly from 2016. In 2016, 4.9% of US households experienced very low food security."
