After two years of development, Oregon’s Farm to School network has a new 10-year vision.  Michelle Markesteyn, OSU Extension’s Farm to School Specialist, said the strategic plan has five main goals.

“Food education for all, local food access for all, school food culture and environment, leadership and professional development and then a goal around market development for Oregon producers,” she said.

Overall, Markesteyn noted, it’s about getting local food to local kids, and teaching students from where their food comes.

“Schools buy direct and through distributors, and directly from farmers, fishers and ranchers.”

In addition to working with farmers, nearly 800 school gardens across Oregon grow food for students and their community.
