Despite February Drop Grocery Prices Remain Higher Year-Over-Year
After a small increase in grocery store food prices in January, we saw the opposite occur last month. The Consumer Price Index for Grocery Store Prices dropped 0.3%
“Only about half of the major food categories saw decreases.”
USDA Food Price economist Ann Marie Kuhns (Coons) says the list of food that reported a drop in prices in February is a long one, including.
“We saw pork prices decline 0.7%, fish and seafood prices were down 1.2%, dairy prices were down 0.7%, we paid 0.9% less for fresh fruits and 2.1% less for fresh vegetables overall. Sugar and sweets were down 3%, and cereals and bakery products were down 0.4%.”
So, what saw an increase last month? Beef and poultry reported some small price hikes. Despite these decreases, food prices at the grocery store as still 0.5% higher than this time last year.
