CSAs Work To Connect Customers With Local Farmers
Are you familiar with Community Supported Agriculture? CSAs works to connect families and individuals directly with local farmers and fresh, seasonal produce. Washington’s Eat Local First recently launched its 2025 CSA Finder to help customers find local food subscriptions near them.
Annika Sampson said CSAs are a great way to help farmers in the “off season” or early in the season. And she added there are a variety of reasons customers participate in CSAs.
“Sometimes it's just wanting to build a relationship with a local farmer wanting to feel that connection to the land and collection to seasonality," she said. " A lot of folks do it because they are wanting to take meaningful action towards a more resilient local food system, and it's a very direct way to support local farmers. There's very few “middle men”, as the case may be. Other people do it because they get produce or products sort of at the peak season, they're fresh, they're freshly harvested, they're more nutritious, they're more flavorful.
Sampson added some customers enjoy participating in CSA because of the novelty, adding it’s like Christmas morning every time a box arrives.
