Apples In Storage Numbers Report Sizable Increase

According to USApple Tracker, fresh apple holdings as of May 1st totaled 47 million bushels, a 10% drop from inventories reported last year, but 5% larger than five-year-average.  When it comes to processing apple holdings, 22 million bushels were reported to start the month, which is an 11% year-over-year increase, and a 19% jump from the five-year average.

Here in the Northwest, Washington reported 43 million bushels of fresh apples on May 1st, and 15 million bushels for processing.  Meanwhile Oregon’s numbers were 250,00 bushels and 124,000 bushels respectively.

The top varieties when it comes to apples in storage include Cosmic Crisp, Fuji, Gala, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Pink Lady and Red Delicious.
