4-H Partnering with Google to Support Computer Science Learning

Last week, the National 4-H Council announced a $1.5 million grant from Google Dot Org to support computer science training and create new computer science pathways for the six million children in 4-H.

National 4-H Council President and CEO Jennifer Sirangelo talked about how the grant will make that happen.

“With Google’s support, 4-H will be able to equip local 4-H community advisors, leaders and educators with new funding, curriculum, training and devices and support from Google’s computer science experts.”

Sirangelo said the effort will be teen led with 4-H leaders and advisor with peer mentoring at the local level.

The partnership is expected to reach 100,000 young people in 22 states in its first year according to Sirangelo.

“Our hope is that together between 4-H and Google is to ultimately scale the program across the entire 4-H system to the more than six million kids we serve today.”

One of the program’s goals will be to show kids how computer science can translate into the real world, especially in rural areas.
