WSU’s Master Gardeners started building gardens this past weekend to help feed the less fortunate as a celebration of World Food Day on Sunday.

The new program is called “Build a Bed to Feed a Family” and the goal is to help 400 low-income and disadvantaged people throughout Benton and Franklin Counties grow and consume fresh, nutritious food.

The program is funded by the United Way in partnership with Second Harvest and will include gardens in the Kennewick Housing Authority, Inspire Development Centers in Pasco and Basin City and other locations throughout the area.

The group is looking for more sponsors to help finish their goal of feeding 400 people, so anyone interested is asked to contact the WSU Master Gardener program.

World Food Day was started in 1946 by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization to free humanity from hunger and malnutrition.
