The Benton-Franklin Master Gardeners will hold a Solstice in the Garden event this weekend, to encourage children to learn more about getting in the soil.  Judy Ricketts told the Washington Ag Network they will have events and activities for children, as young as preschool, all the way up to senior citizens.

She said during Saturday’s event, children get a passport, and after they receive 15 stamps, they can enter the Secret Garden, and meet the characters from the novel.  Ricketts added  this weekend is a great opportunity for young people to see the benefits of gardening up close.

“By looking at our gardens and observing them, you know how rewarding it is to have a garden and you can have any kind of garden, anything from a vegetable garden to a garden in a flower pot to a very elaborate manicured garden and you’ll visit them all.”

Saturday’s Solstice in the Garden starts at 3 p.m. at the Mid-Columbia Library in Kennewick.
