As garden planning is well underway, many gardeners are looking at potentially planting small trees in their garden, either for production or beauty.

Chris Rusch, a Master Gardener with OSU, said trees can really add to your garden.

“The advantage of putting a small tree in is that you also are going to want to plant shrubs and flowers and things along with it so that you have a planting scheme that reflects a nice garden variety.”

It is important to make sure that you get the right tree and put it in the right place, because it can grow poorly, damage your property and other negative impacts if it isn’t thoughtfully done.

Rusch said when you look for a tree, have a conversation on what can maximize the value of its beauty.

“You have a small space, so you’re limited in the number of trees you’re going to select. Look for things that will be beautiful in the spring, fall and winter.”

County extension offices are great places to ask for help from Master Gardeners, or ask at your garden supply store.
