WSDA: We Are Committed To Keeping Washington’s Food Supply Chain Open, Operational

As the number of COVID-19 cases continue to grow nationally, and across the Northwest, some have expressed concern, and even doubt, that there will be enough food. In response Washington state Department of Agriculture Director Derek Sandison released a statement Wednesday saying, “I want to assure the public that we are committed to keeping Washington’s food supply chain open and operational”.

The WSDA’s Hector Castro said Washingtonians should breathe a sigh of relief knowing that food and agriculture is of the utmost importance for the federal government, via the Department of Homeland Security.

“It’s critical that our food and agriculture production continue.  So, I think that the public should feel certain, feel confident that the federal government is going to make sure that food and agriculture production continue and that food is delivered to the places where [consumers] purchase it.”

Castro noted that Governor Jay Inslee is aware of the concerns of Washington’s farm community, and farmers have the full support of the governor.

“He has a lot of confidence in the farmers, and ranchers of our state to continue this important work of feeding the community.”

“We are in uncharted territory that requires creativity and flexibility, but that is nothing new for Washington’s farmers, food processors, and food distributors,” Gov. Inslee said. “The public should know that we are doing everything we can to ensure that all Washingtonians continue to have access to safe, healthy food.”
