The Washington State Department of Agriculture is in the midst of updating the Handbook for Small and Direct Marketing Farms, better known as the green book, and they’re looking for input.

Ele Watts, with WSDA’s Regional Market Programs said they want to hear from a wide variety of people.

“We’re talking farmers, ranchers, ag service providers, educators, WSU extension agents, also aspiring farmers. We want to hear what do they need to know to get into the business, how can we support them in starting their own small and direct marketing farm.”

Feedback desired is what works in the book, what needs to be improved, how information should be displayed among many other things.

Watts said they have heard from farmers noting that it is book is vital for their survival.

“It’s the one place that you can go and look up information on nearly any question that you have; that’s the resource to turn to. We really want to insure that it includes everything that farmers need to know to get their product to market.”

The survey is a handful of questions that Watts believes should take 5-10 minutes to complete.
