The latest USDA winter wheat seedings report has been released and the totals show a low that hasn’t been seen since the early-1900s.

USDA Economist Rob Johannson said four straight years of winter wheat cuts dropped this year’s number below expectations.

“At 32.4 million acres, down 3.8 million acres from last year, the lowest on record since 1909, so that’s pretty significant [and] raises some questions going forward.”

Questions like what will be planted on former winter wheat ground.

In the Northwest, wheat plantings are down two percent with Oregon down three percent, Idaho down four percent and Washington unchanged. As a whole, the Northwest is expected to seed more than 3 million acres of winter wheat.
