Earlier this week, Washington wildlife officials authorized the lethal removal of additional wolves from the Couse pack territory.  The Department of Fish and Wildlife said Monday’s decision by Director Kelly Susewind follows repeated livestock depredations in Asotin County.

Since September 23rd, investigators have confirmed four livestock deaths, one probable death and two injuries involving two producers.  Officials say there have been seven confirmed depredation events in ten months, including two in the past 30 days.  The Department added incremental lethal removal of wolves from the Couse pack will not jeopardize wolf recovery in the Eastern Washington recovery region or statewide.

WDFW said ranchers used nonlethal deterrents, but staff found no additional measures appropriate.
