U.S. Meat exports that cross into Canada usually do so without a problem.  But, there’s always room for improvemnts.  Cheyenne McEndaffer the technical services manager for the U.S. Meat Export Federation, said Canada is a critical market.  She added the biggest issues with our neighbors to the north are detail oriented.

“Since we have so much volume going over, we continue to work on some of the more nuisance items that we have like differences in labeling, differences in cut nomenclature, broader issues sometime with micro issues.  We’d like to mitigate as many of those as possible to make things easier for our exporters."

She said the next step is to work with USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service and the Canadian counterparts to implement proposed changes.

“And if you look at the export requirements for Canada exporting to the U.S., and vice versa they are very long and onerous and so the thought is, Canada and the U.S. both have a very high food safety system so, surely we can harmonize some of these requirements between the two of us.”

McEndaffer added USMEF will work with other trade outlets to make any changes work for all parties, and ensure any and all changed take place as seamless as possible.
