The USDA is going to survey more than 3,000 dairy operations to understand the financial health of the industry and effectiveness of risk management tools.

Torey Lawrence with NASS said they are mailing out postcards to producers this week.

“The results really will help USDA and other policy makers analyze the impacts of the new dairy Margin Protection Program.”

Participation and payouts of the MPP program have not met expectations.

Randy Mooney with the National Milk Producers Federation said the MPP program has not quite been as anticipated.

“But we remain confident that improvements can be made for this still evolving program.”

The hope is that with information collected from the survey, the program can be adjusted to be more effective and therefore bring in more producers.
