U.S./China Trade Relations Challenging

When it comes to crafting a good Ag trade relationship with China, the United States has an enormous amount of work to do.

Chief U-S Ag trade negotiator Gregg Dowd recently told the Senate Ag Committee:

"This is the issue of our time in agriculture is to work and to build a relationship with China to where it needs to be, because there are so many problems."

And U.S. Agriculture Undersecretary for Trade, Ted McKinney told the committee there are things going on behind the scenes with China.

"And just yesterday, Gregg and I co-hosted Vice Minister Huang Jung, who is the lead Ag negotiator from China. I would like to say that once we can renegotiate...whenever time that is...I think Ag can pick up where it left off, and pick up and go. And that's what we're looking to do, whenever that time is right."

But, Dowd said it could take quite a lot of time and work.

"But the benefit, if we make progress and get issues resolved, is enormous."
