UI Extension To Host Succession Planning Workshops

Passing the farm on to the next generation can be very challenging if proper planning doesn’t take place.  To help in that process, University of Idaho Extension will host a free, two-part, virtual workshop introducing participants to farm succession planning and the steps involved in a farm or ranch transfer, either within or outside of the family.

The sessions will take place Wednesday October 1st and Friday October 3rd, starting at noon Pacific.

Colette DePhelps, Northern District area Extension educator, who specializes in community food systems, is organizing the workshops and will serve as the instructor.

Each Workshop Will Focus On A Key Part Of Succession Planning Process

The first workshop session will provide an overview of how to get started with transferring a farm or ranch, including clarifying values, vision and goals and identifying people who should be involved in the transfer process.

The second workshop session will cover the importance of assessing your current financial position and future needs, the position and needs of other parties involved in the farm or ranch transfer and identifying key professional service providers who can support incoming farmers and ranchers and exiting owners during the transfer process. The workshop will also cover the resources and tools for taking the next steps to develop a farm succession/farmland transfer plan.

UI Extension said the workshop is designed for current landowners and incoming producers who are interested in learning the steps involved in farm succession planning. Both sessions will be recorded, and links of recordings will be sent to all of those who register.

Cultivating Success and Idaho Women in Ag, which are both programs operated under UI Extension, are supporting the workshop.  DePhelps is certified as an American Farmland Trust Land Access trainer and is an International Farm Transition Network farm succession coordinator.
