Researchers at WSU released their most recent look at stripe rust and noted that it was found in 100 percent of test wheat fields with susceptible varieties in the Walla Walla area and 90 percent of fields near Lind.

Commercial fields were in better shape with Dr. Xianming Chen noting that stripe rust was generally under control in Umatilla, Walla Walla, Columbia, Garfield, and Asotin counties.

Dr. Chen says weather is conducive to a severe stripe rust season, so if you have varieties with a susceptibility rating of 4 or higher will likely need a fungicide application. Lower ratings are unlikely to need any application.

Barley stripe rust was found in Mount Vernon, Lind and Walla Walla but it’s much lower that instances of wheat stripe rust.
