According to USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey, spring wheat growers nationwide got out of the basement last week when it comes to planting. Noting, growers got 24% of the crop planted, meaning 73% of the crop is now in the ground, with 42% of the crop emerged. Rippey added the average emergence though is 69%. Now for the beleaguered winter wheat crop, Rippey says some rain fell on that crop across the central and southern plains recently.

"[It's] too late to revive the crop and so we are looking at a crop that is gonna end as one of the lower tier rated crops of the 21st century."

Right now rated 40% poor to very poor and in the great plain states.

"All 7 of the reporting States in the great plains reporting winter wheat that is at least 1/4 very poor to poor, with the crop getting worse as you move southward."

For example in Montana 26% of the Winter weeks rated poor to very poor, by the time you hit Texas is up to 80%.
