As farm country starts to put the finishing touches on 2025, USDA is out with its next to last look at the spring wheat harvest.  As of Sunday, the 14th, 94% of the crop has been harvested nationwide, two points ahead of the five-year average, three points ahead of last year at this time.

 

“Already complete now in Minnesota and South Dakota, all six states above 90% harvested," said USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey.  "The state with the most acreage left to harvest, North Dakota, 92% harvested, but even that is ahead of the five-year average of 89%.”

Here in the Northwest, 95% of Washington’s spring wheat has been harvested, while 91% of Idaho’s crop has already been cut..  As we look ahead to 2026, USDA reports 11% of winter wheat plantings have been completed, which is slightly behind the five-year average.

 

“Meanwhile, in the Northwest, where it's been hot and relatively dry of late, planting of the new wheat crop already halfway complete in Washington state, exactly at 50% on the 14th of September. That is well ahead of the five-year average of 42%.”

 

As of Sunday, 13% of Oregon’s winter wheat crop had been planted, while 12% of Idaho’s crop has been planted.  Both of those numbers are slightly behind their respective five-year averages.
