Last week, Southwestern Washington Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez joined local leaders for the ribbon cutting of a new grain storage and loading facility at the Port of Chehalis.

The project adds new grain silos and rail and truck loading terminals, giving farmers expanded access to buyers and new markets.  Gluesenkamp Perez noted until now, limited storage and transportation options have constrained growth for many Lewis County grain producers.

Port officials said the new facility could allow growers to more than double their grain output while keeping products competitive in the marketplace.  The project received more than four million dollars in federal funding secured by Gluesenkamp Perez.

Gluesenkamp Perez said investments like this are critical at a time when many farms face closures, downsizing, and the loss of generational farmland.  She said supporting farmers and strengthening rural economies remains a top priority.

The new terminal is expected to boost opportunities for local farms and farm-related businesses throughout Southwest Washington.
