The scenes of those Iowa and Nebraska floods are sad and frightening enough, but the National Weather Service says it expects the flooding to become more widespread this spring.  So anyone along rivers and streams should think about preparing for the event of high water levels.

North Dakota State Extension Engineer Ken Hallavang said evacuations may need to happen extremely quickly, so prepare a kit now in waterproof bags with important documents, birth certificates, insurance information.  It's also a good idea to have days worth of medicine.  And enough safe drinking water and food to last for awhile, because when it comes to flood water, "It's biologically-contaminated water. So anything that has been exposed to the flood waters that's porous material, will have to be discarded."

Finally, before the water levels rise, make sure you cells phones are completely charged.
