Plan Ahead If You Plan To Buy Or Raise Poultry
Thanks to the high price of eggs, many people across the Northwest may think about purchasing and raising poultry. To help answer questions, or promote the health of both birds and people, there is the National Poultry Improvement Plan. NPIP has many active members across the region, from large Commercial operations to small backyard flocks, and everything in between. For producers who raise chickens, ducks, turkeys, and other types of poultry for the purpose of selling hatching eggs or chicks, NPIP serves as a great resource.
Participation allows member to assure that their flock is healthy, provides guidance on steps to keep your poultry safe from disease, allows members to advertise their birds as NPIP certified, and often makes shipping chicks and eggs easier and more affordable.
Oregon NPIP participants work closely with an Oregon Department of Agriculture district veterinarian to test their birds for poultry diseases of concern. ODA district veterinarians collaborate with participants to ensure that biosecurity practices—steps to prevent disease introduction—are well-suited to each operation type.
The NPIP Dealer program in Oregon allows feed and farm stores to sell NPIP certified chicks to local residents. There are NPIP dealers all across the state, participating in efforts to protect the chicks sold to Oregon customers.
