Oregon State University Extension Service has released an app and e-book that will help homeowners buy, plant and care for a new tree on their land.

Forestry Specialist Paul Ries said it’s critical to understand the best choice because, “Planting trees is like planting money. When you plant a tree, you’re planting an investment in the future of your property.”

Ries says trees can help environmentally by providing clean water and air. They also increase the value of your home.

But there are three important things to remember when selecting a new tree.

First is finding the right place for the right tree. Also Ries says that a $200 hole is better than a $200 tree because that will give any tree you select the best chance to succeed. And finally, if you plan to stake your tree, have a plan for unstaking the tree when it comes time.
