Farmers who are looking to expand their organic portfolio, or are considering getting into organic, can take part in a workshop in Spokane March 23rd put on by WSU and Oregon Tilth.

Drew Katz with Oregon Tilth said they want to work with and inform growers because organic demand is currently outpacing supply.

“We see a real opportunity for growers in Washington to fill the supply gap and hopefully connect with buyers so those buyers sell products that are made with locally and regionally grown crops.”

Katz noted that they wanted to come to Eastern Washington because they see a lot of growth in Western Washington and would like to see that expand.

The workshop will cover the opportunities, rules and other aspects of organic growing, but a big part will also be finding buyers for organic crops according to Katz.

“It’s one thing to be able to farm organically and to be able to make the transition and harvest an organic crop, but then you need to be able to sell your crop and a lot of conventional growers that transition to organic, they can struggle finding market connections.”

The workshop runs from 4:00 p.m. until 8 and you can find more information by going to the event page on Oregon Tilth’s website.
