NWFCS: Row Crops Expected To Be Profitable

In our third installment of Northwest Farm Credit Services snapshot on 2017, we look at area row crops. Karen Witt, NWFCS Vice President said onion grower returns are projected to be profitable this year.

“Early fall onion sales met strong demand, creating favorable early season prices. Questions surrounding onion yields and quality contribute to the higher prices, which are likely to remain throughout the marketing season.”

Witt added contract potatoes are expected to be slightly profitable throughout the season.

“Uncontracted potatoes may slip toward breakeven during harvest but are expected to be profitable later in the season. Growers report average yields for early harvested potatoes despite late planting.”

Witt also noted Idaho producers planted 4.6% fewer acres of potatoes in 2017.
