
NW Winter Wheat Crop Looks Very Good
More of the national winter wheat crop is headed.
"39% of this 2025 U.S winter wheat crop, headed by May 4th, that's six points ahead of the five-year average and slightly behind last year's pace of 41%,” said USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey. He noted that California leads all states with 83% of its winter wheat heading. Meanwhile the Northwest starting to report numbers for the season.
“This week, for the first time, we are seeing some heading moving pretty far to the north all the way up into states like Ohio, where 7% of the crop is headed up from 0% last week. Other states seeing their first heading progress include Oregon, 6% headed and Washington state at 1%.”
Rippey added that 1% of Idaho’s crop is headed as well.
When it comes to the condition of the winter wheat crop, 51% is described as good to excellent, which is an improvement from the numbers reported last week, as well as this time last year. Here in the Northwest, 65% of Idaho’s winter wheat crop is good to excellent, 66% of Oregon’s crop is in a similar condition, while 78% of Washington’s winter wheat crop is good to excellent.
