USDA’s Delay Of Poultry Rule Concerns The Farm Bureau

USDA is considering plans to rescind rules under the Packers and Stockyards Act that has both the American Farm Bureau Federation and National Farmers Union upset.  The Poultry Grower Payment Systems and Capital Improvement Systems was set to start July 1st, but was delayed to 2027 by the Administration.  AFBF President Zippy Duvall said this move by the USDA could erode safeguards for poultry growers and cattle farmers.

“The rules help protect farmers from retaliation by large processors, increase transparency, and improve pay systems for contract poultry growers," Duvall noted.  "They make it clear that unfair practices by poultry companies and meatpackers will not be tolerated. They also take on the poultry tournament pay system that’s punished growers for factors outside their control.”

Duvall added efforts by the Farm Bureau to advocate for a more level playing field are now at risk.

“We urge President Trump and USDA to demonstrate their commitment to farmers by leaving these critical safeguards in place.”
