Nationally, spring wheat planting is slightly behind the five-year average.  USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey says almost a third of the crop is in the ground; 32% nationally, slightly behind the five-year average of 35% and last year's 42%.

"We do see a significant range from 19% planted in North Dakota all the way up to 87% in Washington state," Rippey said.  "And then emergence nationally, 10% of the spring wheat, 1% ahead of the five-year average of 9%, slightly behind last year's 12%.”

As of Sunday, Idaho had 82% of its spring wheat crop planted, well ahead of the five-year average of 72%.  Washington’s 87% is slightly higher than the five-year average there of 83%.

And when it comes to emergence, Idaho is reporting 55%, again, well ahead of the five-year average of 38%.  Washington’s emergence figure sits at 65%; the five-year average for early May is 50%.
