NW Canola Continues To Enjoy Growth

Canola continues to grow in popularity across the Northwest.  Karen Sowers, Washington State University Extension Oilseed Specialist told the Washington Ag Network, several keys pushed acres higher in 2017; increased interest, record yield especially in winter varieties, and a competitive price.

“We’ve talked quite a bit this year about the benefits of having canola in a cereal rotation, but if the wheat market is still down, canola is becoming a pretty attractive crop to more producers who’ve never done it before.  So, this is not just Washington, this is Oregon, Idaho Montana and Washington.”

According to NASS, over 221,000 acres of canola were grown in the Northwest this season.  Sowers expects that figure to increase by roughly 33% next year, mainly pushed higher by winter varieties.
