Newhouse Reacts To USDA Assistance Package

On Tuesday, the USDA announced plans to make $12 billion available for farmers impacted by the retaliatory tariffs implemented by China.  Reaction across the farming community has been mixed.  Representative Dan Newhouse notes while $12 billion sounds like a lot of month, Washington alone exports $15 billion in Ag products annually. And while it dulls the pain of the tariffs, Newhouse says the package is not a long term solution.

“It would not go a long way to help agriculture in the long term.  It’s appreciated by the Ag industry, that the Administration would take actions to dull the impact of retaliatory tariffs.”

Newhouse said what farmers are looking for is free and open trade with China, Canada, Mexico, the EU and many others, so they can sell their products.  He added many farmers support what the President is doing, and hope it leads to positive results.
