On Thursday, the USDA announced an adjustment to the Coronavirus Food Assistance Program. Apple, potato and blueberry producers are now eligible for direct CFAP payments. Central Washington’s Dan Newhouse said this adjustment is key for the farm economy, especially Northwest producers.

“And I, as you know, have been very involved in leading efforts to educate the Agriculture Secretary as to the need for our producers to be a part of this program, so I’m just very happy that they’ve made this announcement.  I think this is going to be a big boost to many of our producers.”

While this expansion of CFAP does not solve all of the problems producers face, Newhouse says he’s hopeful this will provide the extra assistance local growers need.

According to the USDA, producers will be able to submit applications that include these additional commodities on Monday, July 13th. FSA will accept applications through August 28th. For additional details about the changes to CFAP, visit the USDA's Website.
