In North Central Washington, Peshastin Hi-Up Growers Cooperative and Blue Bird, Inc. announced Wednesday a new collaborative, state-of-the-art pear packing line.  The announcement was made at Hi-Up's 100th Anniversary Celebration.

Peshastin officials noted in Wednesday’s announcement that escalating labor costs, changing consumer patterns and retail packaging requirements have required technology adoption and innovation in the pear industry.  Each organization will continue to operate independently and will add the new optical sizing line for the benefit of both companies, their growers and employees.

Coop officials say the innovative collaboration, known as Peshastin Pear Packers, allows a significant reduction in costs through shared investment and economies of scale, while handling pears more gently and reducing shrinkage.

The Effort Will Benefit The Regional Economy

Adding to the economic impact to the region, many local Washington companies were involved in the design, construction and implementation of the project, including:

  • Bethlehem Construction (Cashmere)
  • Schmitt Electric (Wenatchee)
  • Plumbco, Inc. (Wenatchee)
  • And others

The new packing line will be operational in time for the 2025 harvest.
