Round five of the NAFTA talks are set to begin Friday in Mexico City.  Some in the ag community have expressed concerns about how an altered NAFTA could look and what happens if the deal falls apart.  Eastern Washington’s Cathy McMorris Rodgers told the Washington Ag Network whether it’s NAFTA, KORUS or other trade deals, she’s in favor of improving agreements to benefits Northwest growers.

“And often times, as American manufactures and producers and growers, we face significant costs, tariffs and other fees that are put in place by other countries.  Where as Americans we haven’t put up those kinds of barriers.”

McMorris Rodgers added whether that involves tweaking current trade agreements or establishing new bilateral deals, she wants to see something happen soon.

“But I think we just need to get it going, we need to be aggressive, in addressing these trade agreements, so that the American producers and Eastern Washington growers and manufactures can have access to these markets.”

Trump, since the campaign trail, and now as President has said he won’t support trade deals that don’t put Americans first and help trim down our trade deficit.
