USDA's Under-Secretary for Trade Ted McKinney says diversification, gaining entry, and building new markets to complement existing ones is essential to expand U.S. exports.  McKinney recently told a Washington D.C. audience, that while new opportunities are important, existing relationships with major trade partners remains a priority as well.

"I believe we will get there on NAFTA, maybe even sooner than we think. I believe we will get there on Korea. Right now, Ag in Korea and Ag in the U.S say leave Ag alone, so, maybe that will prevail. I believe one way or another, we will get to an agreement with Japan."

McKinney added that the mission of building, and in some cases, rebuilding markets, is one that is long-term and with "yes" comes challenges.

"[However], I also hope we are laying a foundation so that any and all countries are in fact and in evidence, free and fair trade. And, oh by the way, we expand to a whole lot more countries than the ones people list off on five fingers."
