MAHA Report Improved, Rollins Notes
Sound, simple and clear. That’s how Ag Secretary Brooke Rollins describes the push in upcoming national dietary guidelines, while previewing their content.
“These guidelines will prioritize whole, healthy and nutritious foods, such as whole fat dairy, fruits, vegetables and meats and suggests limiting highly processed foods and those high in sugar,” Rollins said.
The dietary guidelines will follow recommendations by the Make America Health Again Commission of which Rollins is a member.
“I am encouraged by the roadmap that this report presents," the Secretary noted. "It shows where opportunities exist to improve technology, research and outcomes.”
Commodity groups disappointed by the earlier MAHA report were more pleased with the updated one, which acknowledges EPA’s science-based pesticide approvals and the benefits of beef and whole milk. Another outgrowth of MAHA is an upcoming pilot program on regenerative farming practices.
“To address on-farm resource concerns, while also providing farmers with usable, outcomes-based conservation plans.”
Rollins added the effort will leverage existing research funding to produce applied science that growers can use to regenerate soil and use fewer inputs.
