Klamath River Flows Increased To Support of Yurok Ceremony

The Bureau of Reclamation temporarily increased flows in the Klamath River to support the Yurok Tribe’s annual Boat Dance Ceremony.  The increased flows began August 28, ahead of Sunday’s ceremony, an important cultural tradition for the Yurok Tribe and its people’s longstanding connection to the river.

"Water management in the Klamath Basin requires balancing many important needs," said Reclamation’s Acting Regional Director Adam Nickels. "Supporting the Yurok Tribe's Boat Dance Ceremony demonstrates Reclamation's commitment to working collaboratively with tribal partners and recognizing the cultural importance of the river while continuing to meet our broader water management responsibilities." 

Officials said the operation reflects Reclamation’s commitment to working with tribes and incorporating cultural considerations into Klamath Basin water management.
