Come January, Republicans will take control of the U.S. Senate, putting Washington’s and Oregon’s Senators in the minority, for the first time in four years.  Despite the change, Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley said he will continue to find Republican partners for legislation he believes is good for his state.

“I’ve been able to secure well over $100M to assist with the Klamath Basin," Merkley said.  "That’s really important to a key agricultural section of our state, and to the ecosystem of the Klamath River.  There’s just a tremendous amount that I’ll continue to do in partnership with Lisa Murkowski, of Alaska, as we work on the Interior Committee together.”

Merkley added he works well with both men running for Senate Majority Leader, but he also vowed to block a number of GOP proposals.

“All of the bad things they want to do: drain the national Treasury and give it to the most powerful corporations, the richest Americans, I’ll oppose with every fiber of my being," he said.  "When Trump says he wants to take down the Affordable Care Act, which would dump millions and millions of Americans out in the cold without insurance, I’ll oppose that with every fiber of my being. I hope that we can get through these four years, restore the integrity of our institutions and minimize the damage."

Merkley said Oregon will continue to benefit from Democrat-led policies, like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill, Inflation Reduction Act and Chips and Science Act, all of which are authorized for two more years.
