Some Oregon officials worry the back-and-forth nature of federal government lay-offs will have long-term impacts on future hiring needs.  At a recent town hall meeting with Oregon Congressional Democrats, several federal employees said actions by DOGE and the Trump Administration are pushing out good workers.

“If I don’t lose my job - through the reduction in force that we all know is coming - before then, I will not have a job after September," said Estelle, a researcher with USDA.  "And, to be frank, I won’t seek federal service again, during this administration.”

Matt designs visitor centers for the Fish and Wildlife Service and told lawmakers that the government is an unreliable employer.

“I love what I do.  I provide a lot of experiences for the visiting public.  I do not want to move on.  But, I feel like my hand is being forced,” he said.

Matt said he’s a 28-veteran of the public sector, and two years from retirement.  He noted he’s worried his retirement benefits won’t be there if he stays.

“At this stage, I would love to stay longer," Matt continued.  "But what are the guarantees that any rules are going to be followed?  Zero.  So, it’s a very scary time for new employees and for employees at the end of their career.”
