Legislation supporters say will provide the Washington State Beef Commission clear direction on their priorities and improve transparency of its financial operation was signed into law by Governor Jay Inlsee last week.  Representative Tom Dent sponsored House Bill 2073, and he said it was a multi-year effort between farmers, ranchers and others in the beef industry.  The long-term goal is to improve the operation of the Commission.

Under the new law, the Commission is required to submit a details budget and expenditure report to law makers at the end of the fiscal year.  The commission will also focus on promoting the beef industry, as well as engage in health and safety research and education, provide support to effort to increase beef consumption.

“The Beef Commission has done great work. This legislation just ensures the Commission is using their funds efficiently and effectively by requiring some financial transparency and accountability,” the Moses Lake Republican said. “It also provides clarity in the RCW’s by outlining the commission’s priorities and responsibilities.”

The Commission consists of nine commissioners, including the director of the state Department of Agriculture who appoints the other eight members. Commissioners serve three-year terms.

The new law takes effect July 22nd.
