College students and professors were among the attendees at the annual Economic Outlook Seminar at Central Washington University and they got some very helpful advice.

John Szczepanski, Director of the US Forage Export Council for the National Hay Association said exports are a high-value, low margin job so the best answer in any interview…

“I like international business because the four Ps of marketing; the product, price, promotion and place, the emphasis on getting it right intensifies because of international business.”

Because agriculture’s margins are so low, emphasizing a love or desire to travel does not meet with what producers are looking for in terms of making every dollar count.

Szczepanski said if you really want to impress, emphasize that mindfulness.

“I like agriculture, or I like international business, because it forces us to really understand the marketing mix and to make sure that we intensify our efforts to get it right cause we’ll lose money otherwise.”

Szczepanski said forage is a billion-dollar industry and often outperforms many other industries in agriculture.
