Risch, Others Call On FDA To Crack Down On Misuse Of Dairy Terms

Idaho Senator Jim Risch along with Wisconsin's Tammy Baldwin are calling on the FDA to crack down on the misuse of dairy terms for plant-based products, which they said unfairly impacts dairy farmers and processors and misleads consumers.  They were joined on the House side by Pennsylvania representatives John Joyce and New York's Josh Riley.

“The blatant misuse of dairy terms for plant-based products unfairly impacts dairy farmers and processors and harms consumers due to inaccurate labeling information," the members of Congress wrote this week.  “We urge you to enforce dairy standards of identity and stop imitation products from usurping dairy terms. Rescinding the current FDA guidance and enforcing existing dairy standards of identity is in best interest of our nation’s consumers, dairy farmers and broader public health.”

In July of last year, Risch and Baldwin introduced the DAIRY PRIDE Act to prohibit non-dairy imitation products, such as those made from plants, nuts, or grains, from using dairy names like “milk” or “yogurt.”

The DAIRY PRIDE Act has support from the Idaho Dairymen’s Association, National Milk Producers Federation, and American Farm Cooperative.
