There may be more farmer's markets in the U-S than there were 20 years ago, but don't call them "trendy".

"I wouldn't necessarily call it trendy. I see more of a movement in communities to become healthier, to create a community based place where people can really gather and meet one another in the community," said Ron Batcher is an architect with the USDA's Agricultural Marketing Service.

"Many farmer's markets, some are in parking lots, some are on the side of the streets, some are actually indoors, in certain areas,” Batcher added.

He said that farmer's markets are good ways for farmers to see more profit for their produce, citing it's a good direct-to-consumer approach to farmers to get their wears and produce out to the public.
