Prices Received Up, Prices Paid Down In November
The prices farmers received and paid in the month of November were a mixed bag.
The November Prices Received Index increased 3.8% thanks to increases in the Crop Production Index, not only month-over-month but from 2024 numbers as well. At 125.1, Agricultural Production increased 3.8% from October and 3.8% from November 2024. And at 98.7, the Crop Production Index was up 2.6% from last month and 4.1% from the previous year. The Livestock Production Index, at 158.5, increased 0.1% from October, but decreased 0.4% year-over-year.
Producers received higher prices during November for market eggs, soybeans, grapes, and lettuce but lower prices for cattle, hogs, calves, and broccoli. In addition to prices, the volume change of commodities marketed also influences the indexes. In November, there was increased monthly movement for cattle, corn, milk, and market eggs and decreased marketing of soybeans, grapes, lettuce, and dry beans.
When it comes to the prices paid in November, USDA says the November Prices Paid Index for Commodities and Services, Interest, Taxes, and Farm Wage Rates (PPITW), slipped 1% from October to 153.0. That number is 9.1% higher than the figure reported in November 2024.
USDA said lower prices in November for feeder cattle, hay & forages, LP gas, and concentrates more than offset higher prices for diesel, other services, potash & phosphate, and feeder pigs.
