On Capitol Hill this week there are reports of delays in rolling out farm bill language, with some differences of opinion among lawmakers on some issues that may have bogged down the process.

"I would be a huge advocate for a 2018 farm bill and not a 2019 or 2020 farm bill," said Secretary Sonny Perdue.

He noted the bill is likely to build mainly on the current bill making it potentially easier to craft and many lawmakers are working to get it finished this year.

"But realistically we also have to understand that 2018 is an even numbered year, and we have things happen in this country in even number years and that is elections and the farm bill can unfortunately totally overcome the politics involved in the farm bill," said Perdue.

He added he is still hopeful the Farm Bill will pass this year.
