Expert Says World Has Enough Wheat

Are we going to run out of wheat over the next year? One expert says, "no". Even though shipments of wheat from Ukraine are nearly non-existent right now, and the U.S. winter wheat crop is struggling.

"We're not gonna run out of wheat, people will be able to buy wheat, but it's gonna come at a pretty high price."

A price, Joe Glauber with the International Food Policy Institute said many nations can't afford. During a recent USDA webinar, Glauber noted that the food supplies of several Middle East countries depend on buying reasonably priced wheat from Ukraine.

"And these countries are 30-35% of their diets are from wheat wheat products.  Yemen imports about a 100% of its wheat; they have their own civil war going on.  It's not a question of the country, you know, stepping up its safety net,  it has no resources, really, to kind of cover that sort of thing.  So...you're really talking about humanitarian aid, and I think that's the good thing, is that the world seems to be coming forward with providing war humanitarian aid."

And Glauber said it's going to take a lot of aid over the next year.
