Drought Declared In Oregon’s Jefferson County
Earlier this week, Governor Tina Kotek declared a drought emergency in Jefferson County.
According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, Jefferson County has been experiencing moderate drought since July 15th, and severe drought from July 29th through September 2nd. Drought metrics like the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index also indicate long-term drought conditions have persisted in Jefferson County over the last five to 12 months.
The Governor’s office said this week's declaration unlocks a number of drought-related emergency tools, including assistance to local water users. Drought declarations also allow the Water Resources Department to expedite review processes and reduce fee schedules.
Jefferson is the 8th drought declaration this year in Oregon.
