Whether you’re using a trailer for work, or planning a weekend getaway, the Oregon Department of Forestry is reminding you to do your part to prevent wildfires this summer.  ODF’s Natalie Weber said it’s vital motorists double check your tow chains before hitting the road, ensuring they are secure and not dragging.  And that’s important whether you’re driving across the state, or down your local rural road.

“As the state of Oregon's Wildfire protection agency, the Oregon Department of Forestry, responds to wildfires along the sides of roads and highways all the time, "Weber said.  "Often they're started by tow chains dragging on the pavement.  Sparks from the metal hitting the road can easily reach dry grass and start a wildfire. Sometimes without the driver even knowing.”

Weber added before heading out, check to make sure those chains are no where near the pavement.  And that prevention is not a one-and-done effort.

“When you make stops along the way, check to make sure they haven't come loose, and if you see a car throwing sparks, report it by calling 911," she said.  "These measures can make all the difference this summer.”
